Where does the sheriff not own a gun and his deputy have to keep his one bullet in his pocket? Of course, everyone knows it is only in the television town of Mayberry. Mayberry was never a real town, but Andy Griffith is a real person.

The Andy Griffith Show was a television series that began in'60 and continued for a total of eight seasons. Even now, forty years after the cameras stopped filming the television series, Andy, Aunt Bea, Deputy Fife and Opie continue to be shown in homes across America through the syndicated television show. In fact, the shows have been shown far more times in syndication than they ever were when the show was on prime time.
Sheriff Andy Taylor was played by an actor named Andy Griffith. He was one of the reasons for the show's popularity in the eight seasons that it ran and even today.
Parts of the show came from Andy Griffith's real life. There were shops that appeared in the make believe television town of Mayberry that had real counterparts in Griffith's hometown of Mount Airy, North Carolina. Mount Airy was portrayed in the show as the next little town down the road.
During College, Andy Griffith studied music, however his specialty was always country humor. His first recording, "What it was, Was Football" was a monologue with a country spin.
Griffith also acted on Broadway. His Broadway play, "No Time for Sargents" was filmed as a movie during the'50s.
After the Andy Griffith Show ended, Andy did try a few more television series, but did not have any more hits until almost twenty years later when he landed the lead role in Matlock in'86. This show allowed him to play a country lawyer who was also able to solve crimes.
In 2006, Andy said goodbye to his old friend. Don Knotts, who had played Barney, died in Los Angeles after battling cancer. Their friendship was so deep, that Andy Griffith traveled from his home in North Carolina to visit his former co-star in the hospital.
Andy Griffith has received several awards. For his Broadway acting, he was nominated for two Tony awards. For his television series Matlock, Griffith was given a'87 People's Choice award. He is a recipient of the Metal of Freedom award and has a section of a North Carolina state highway named after him.
Andy's hard work has given him success in many different branches of the entertainment field. Some of these successes are in outdoor theater, Broadway, stand up comedy and movies, but his biggest success will always be from the role of Sheriff Andy Taylor in the television town of Mayberry.
